Citi and American Airlines are discussing the potential of making Citi the exclusive issuer of the AA credit card line. Currently, the cards are split between Citi and Barclays. This was due to a merger between American and US Airways. Back then, Citi was offered the chance to go exclusive with AA. That would have enabled AA as a transfer partner. Alas, Citi didn’t like the deal terms and the product line remained split.
